This device is a multifunctional analyzer for sound, vibration, and magnetic fields. It offers a comprehensive range of measuring functions:
- Sound: Analyzer (FFT / RTA / Spectrogram), Scope, RMS, and Signal Generator
- Vibration: Analyzer (FFT), Scope, and RMS
- Magnetic field: Scope and RMS
One of the great advantages of this analyzer is that its source code is publicly available as open-source software on GitHub. This allows users to create custom versions of the software according to their specific needs. Additionally, the device welcomes sponsors through GitHub Sponsors or patrons on Patreon. More information on sponsorship can be found at the bottom of this page.
When using the measurement screens, you have the ability to pinch (zoom) and pan (scroll), except for the RTA and spectrogram screens, where panning is available for band selection. Tapping on the measurement screen allows you to pause the measurement. The paused time is displayed, making it convenient for capturing evidence. Simply take a screenshot using the standard method of your system.
Below are some application examples:
- Use the analyzer to record quantitative evidence of the current situation and apply it to overcome obstacles.
- Utilize it for science education purposes.
- Combine it with a sweep generator to enhance the acoustic characteristics of listening rooms.
The Octave RTA (real-time analyzer) includes two configurable items that can be adjusted as needed through the "Settings .app": window function and latency.
Please note that this application incorporates an audio signal oscillation function which, depending on operation, may produce sound that can be harmful to humans. We strongly advise against using headphones or headsets. We cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by such equipment.
It's important to recognize that the spectrum analysis resolution for speech is inherently around 11 Hz. However, through interpolation processing, the actual resolution can reach a maximum of 3 Hz. This level of accuracy is not sufficient for instrument tuning purposes. For instrument tuning, we recommend using dedicated tuning applications.
If you find it difficult to locate a specific point while zooming in or scrolling, simply press and hold the measurement screen to return to the default state where the entire picture is visible.
In cases where a significant peak near 1 Hz lasts for more than 10 seconds after the beginning of spectrum analysis, any peaks below 1 Hz will be ignored after 10 seconds. This scenario may occur when the accelerometer is not responsive enough.
To achieve optimal results with the Octave RTA, we suggest utilizing the Window Function and Fast Latency Mode.
The adjustable range for FFT/Scope/RMS gain is from -20 dB to 20 dB. The adjustable range for SP gain is from 0 dB to 80 dB. The noise reduction threshold ranges from -80 dB to 0 dB.
This device allows you to output data for Sound Spectrum, Sound Spectrogram, and every RMS value. You can utilize these data files through the Files.app on iOS or iTunes File Sharing on Mac. Please note that the output file for Spectrogram is larger compared to other data files.
